⚙️ Table Talk #126: The Curious Case Of Orangina On Holiday 🍊🤷‍♀️

TABLE TALK #126

It’s a curious thing, that we crave a zesty Orangina while lounging under the sun on a far-flung beach, but would never dream of sipping it at the pub on a dreary Sunday afternoon.

Welcome to the whimsical world of environmental influences, where everything from the weather to the wallpaper can dictate what delights our taste buds.

🍝 MAIN COURSE 🍝

Picture this: you’re sprawled on a sun lounger, the salty breeze dancing through your hair, the sun smiling down on you, and what’s this? A bottle of Orangina, glistening like a golden treasure, waiting to satisfy you with every sip.

Why does this fizzy friend feel so perfect here? It’s because our environments craft a sensory tapestry that intwines with our food and drink choices, making them feel right or wrong in that moment. This sunny hued humdinger of a drink perfectly complements a seaside escape.

Teleport back to your local pub and here, the dim lighting wraps around you like a comforting blanket, and the air is thick with the aroma of hearty pies. Ah, the pub—a bastion of comfort where camaraderie reigns supreme and the food is as warm as the conversations. Suddenly, Orangina seems out of place, like a lone disco ball at a barn dance.

When it comes to our perception of what feels right when, it seems a trio of things are at play.

The first is seasonality. As the seasons change, so too do our cravings. As Autumn beckons and the leaves turn a kaleidoscope of reds and golds, the unapologetic hue of an Aperol Spritz feels a little brash, yet a hot spiced cider the perfect pairing.

The second is social influence. Imagine attending a summer barbecue with a complex, rich red under your arm, it somehow doesn’t feel half as appropriate as a pale pink rose, however mad that sounds.

The third is culture. Different places around the globe are synonymous with different ingredients, flavours and distillations. Drinking a peated whisky on Islay or sake in Kyoto feels like diligent touristing, an insight into not just the industry but the soul of a place.

Our tastes, as it turns out, aren’t just our tastes, they’re as changeable as the weather and the wallpaper after all.

🍮 SWEET ENDINGS 🍮
For dessert today, we want to leave you with food for thought.

What if we disentangled ourselves from seasonality, social influence and culture and let our taste buds dictate good and proper?

Would Pick'n'Mix be a weekly treat, not just a perk of the cinema? Would Sangria be your tipple of choice to accompany you through winter’s depths?

This autumn, why not drink rosé to the sweet pitter patter of rain.

🍷 WHAT'S NEW
FROM
WEDNESDAY'S DOMAINE? 🍷

After our typo in Saturday’s email, you’d be forgiven for thinking we were breaking out of wine and breaking into the ever so lucrative hair removal market.

Missing the all important ‘l’ in our ‘public service announcement’ wasn’t ideal, but these things happen and we were glad many of you could have a laugh, even if it was on us...

The silver lining is that we’ve since gone down a happy little rabbit hole of global brand blunders, and it appears that we’re in very good company.

Enjoy these, we certainly did,

Until next time,

Luke x
